LOT NUMBER 2
Murano Style Calla Lily Trumpet Shape Vase, second half C20th
A delicately blown glass vase of trumpet shape, the squared cylindrical body flaring towards the base and top with four fins, the neck spreading outwards with a deeply scalloped rim resembling flower petals, the glass in a variety of colours, green merging into cream with red at the top. The artistry of this piece is quite clear and the form would have required skilful glass blowing techniques. The work is similar to that of Murano pieces, made in Venice in the 1960s and 1970s but there is no proof of manufacture there. Often termed ‘Jack in the Pulpit’, from a supposed resemblance to that flower, this vase is actually modelled on the Calla Lily. (‘Jack in the Pulpit’ has a raised petal at the back whereas here the petals are all similar.). Despite the uncertainties we certainly have here a striking piece of C20th Italian art glass with considerable decorative appeal.Size: | Ht 39cm (max), Width 22cm (top) 5.5cm (body), Base 10.5cm square |
