LOT NUMBER 5
Pair of Beige Opaline Glass Vases, enamelled decoration, probably French late C19th
An elegant pair of beige glass vases of bottle form with a stepped foot, modelled collar and a tall slightly flaring neck, decorated in coloured enamels with flowering holly, the reverses plain and the top rims gilt. Opaline glass is produced by adding materials such as bone ash or lead-crystal to produce a semi opaque effect, the colour varying according to the minerals added and ranging from white through yellows, greens and blues to black. First made in Murano in the sixteenth century it was to enjoy an enormous vogue in France during the nineteenth but had also been produced in England at Bristol in the eighteenth. The delicate style of the decoration here clearly points to French work and a dating towards the end of the nineteenth century seems reasonable indeed the beginnings of the Art Nouveau can perhaps be seen here. Form, colour and decoration combine to produce a highly attractive pair of ornaments which can be enjoyed in a contemporary setting as much as they were when they were made.Size: | Ht 17cm, Width (max) 7.5cm, Base 5cm |
