Swirl design Cranberry glass Decanter and Stopper, probably Italian mid C20th
An unusual decanter and stopper set, the broad pear shape body narrowing towards the neck which has a curved lip at the front and a loop handle at the back and is fitted with a flattened ovoid stopper. Both pieces have moulded decoration and the handle has repeating circular indentations, the clear glass with swirling ribbon highlights in cranberry glass. While cranberry glass decanters are seen with a combination of clear and coloured glass there is no close parallel to what we have here. Similar pieces were made in England (for example Fenton glass) and by the ‘Bohemian’ workshops (Bohemian glass was made in the regions of Bohemia and Silesia, now parts of the Czech republic). There are also a few Italian pieces, some made on the island of Torcello near Venice. But none of these is exactly the same and the form of the stopper is very rarely found. The rather ‘open’ decoration with the trails of Cranberry coloured glass suggests most of all though the last of these with a dating, perhaps, to the mid C20th. While something of a mystery this remains an attractive and appealing item in particular for collectors of Cranberry glass wars.Size: | Ht (max) 26cm (jug) 19cm, Width (max) 14cm, Depth (max) 8cm, Base 12cm x 6.5cm |
