LOT NUMBER 17
Japanese Arita Bowl decorated with Ho Ho Birds circa 1880
A Japanese Arita Bowl of shallow circular form with a short foot decorated in polychrome enamels with ‘Ho Ho’ birds and precious objects to the exterior, the top rim with diaper work in underglaze blue inside and out, and four panels to the interior with ‘Ho Ho’ birds and precious objects in a landscape setting set between triangular and ovoid segments with stylised foliage and diaper work, with a chrysanthemum head to the centre, the base glazed. Style of decoration and the paste of the foot indicates late nineteenth century Japanese work from the Meiji period (1868–1912) dating to around 1880 and this piece is typical of the wares manufactured for export to the West at that time which found their way into many European interiors.Size: | Diam 24cm; Ht 9.2cm; Base 10.5cm |
