LOT NUMBER 8
Pair of Japanese Imari Small Dishes, circa 1880
A pair of Japanese Imari dishes with gently lobed edges and slightly curved sides, typically decorated in the ‘Imari’ colourings (underglaze blue, red and gold, here as sometimes with the addition of green enamel) with alternating panels of diaper design, garden scenes and stylised birds and rabbits, the centre with a panel of the ‘three friends’ (pine, prunus and bamboo) within a whorl pattern border, the exterior with stylised flowers and the base with a four charcter mark. Probably small serving dishes, this pair most likely derives from an original set of five. Paste of the foot and style of decoration indicates late nineteenth century Japanese work from the Meiji period (1868–1912) dating to around 1880.Size: | Diam 13.5cm; Ht 3cm; Base 8cm |
