LOT NUMBER 19
Two similar Chinese Export Style Monteith Form Jardinieres, C20th
Two Chinese Export Style Jardinieres, each of deep oval form with wavy edge rims, one with rococo style handles in pink enamel and one with lion head mask handles in iron red and mustard yellow, both similarly decorated in polychrome with insects, butterflies and flowers, the interior of the first with a floral spray and of the second with fish. Each has a slight craquelure effect to the glaze which is probably intentional and both have glazed bases with numbers applied to the biscuit foot. The form here is a miniature version of the Chinese ‘Monteith’ first produced in the early to mid eighteenth century. The wavy rim was designed to hold the stems of glasses which were stood to cool in iced water placed in the interior. The style of the decoration is in Chinese Export taste as well, but dating here is to the C20th probably around the 1960s. Some similar examples have Chinese seal marks and one the name of a Chinese manufacturer but this does not assist with dating these pieces. Purely decorative objects then but amusing creations which are pleasing to the contemporary eye.
