LOT NUMBER 19
A Pair of Chinese Cantonese Vase Covers circa 1860
This is a pair of covers for a pair of Chinese Cantonese Vases which would have been decorated in a similar pattern. The original design was of a vase with a broad baluster form topped with a domed cover with a kylin or fo dog finial and is one of the classic Chinese 'models' of the nineteenth century. The decoration here is in Famille Rose enamels with panels of birds and flowers on a turquoise ground with stylised scrolling foliage, the well modelled finials also in famille rose enamels. Other examples in the more common Rose Medallion design tended to have gilt finials. Paste and style of decoration allow a dating to the second half of the nineteenth century. Although damaged, this fine quality pair of lids provides an opportunity to sample some of the Chinese Export ware of the nineteenth century at its best. And, of course, some lucky person might own a pair of matching bases!Size: | 13 cm diameter, cover with finial 12 cm |
