LOT NUMBER 16
Japanese Arita Blue and White Bowl, first half C20th
A fine quality Japanese Blue and White Bowl of shallow rounded form with a short foot, the interior decorated with ten irregularly shaped segments, five plain, three with geometric designs (diaper, key pattern, lozenge) and two with stylised floral tendrils, all arranged to form a swirling effect and grouped around a central flower head, the border with repeating stylised lotus flower heads, the exterior plain with two simple lines, and the base with a four character mark. This ‘swirling’ pattern is sometimes found on late nineteenth century polychrome plaques. Dating here is probably later, perhaps to around 1920, in the middle of the Taisho period (1912 – 1926), but care has been taken with this piece and the mark, which unfortunately cannot be deciphered, no doubt denotes the studio which created it.
