LOT NUMBER 21
Wedding Cake style glass bead necklace, Venetian 1930s
A glass bead necklace made in the 'Wedding Cake' style with plain round beads alternating with banded cylindrical beads with elaborate surface decoration. The 'wedding cake' jewellery style takes its name from the elaborately decorated cakes which began to appear at around the same time as 'fiorato' or floral beads were beginning to appear in Venice and elsewhere in the early nineteenth century where the beads look like a little cakes with 'icing' of swirls, dots, flowers and aventurine, which consists of metallic bits, usually copper, to give additional sparkle. This necklace dates to the 1930s and is fitted with the original screw clasp. The red colour glass used adds to the decorative appeal of the style.Size: | 43cm in length; the wedding cake beads are 12mm x 11mm |
