LOT NUMBER 1
West Germany Bay Keramik Jug, mid C20th
A stoutly potted jug or pitcher of typical bulbous form with a broad ovoid body above a spreading foot and rising to a concave neck with a lip, a large loop handle to the rear, decorated in bright enamels in various shades of blue with relief moulded geometric bands and textured designs, the base marked 'BAY W-Germany 67 20'.West German pottery is a name given to pottery made in West Germany from the 1950s to the 1970s, an era during which the potters in the various factories there experimented with colour, glaze and shape in a variety of bold designs. One of the more well known concerns was Bay Keramik, founded by Eduard Bay in the 1930s and based in Ransbach Baumbach in the heart of the main West German pottery producing region. Production continued there until the 1970s when the factory is believed to have closed down. This jug is a typical example of their designs and of the ware in general and probably dates to the 1950s or 1960s. Its decorative appeal remains today.
