Abstract style Japanese Ceramic Tea Set, mid C20th
This is a rather striking earthenware pottery tea service made in Japan most likely in the 1950s/1960s. The shapes are often angular and geometric and the set we have comprises a square teapot and cover with a wicker handle, six square cups, also with wicker handles, a milk jug, a covered sugar basin and a large bowl with a lip for pouring and a circular aperture at the top. The earthenware body can be clearly seen from the finish of the foot rims (See images 4, 7, 11, 14, 17) and all the pieces are glazed in black to the exterior with a turquoise craquelure glaze to the interior which is also used for the lids of the teapot and sugar basin, most of the pieces with restrained decoration of bamboo shoots. For some reason, the bowl was left plain and its function, with the circular opening at the top, is unclear – perhaps it was intended to hold a tea whisk or possibly it stood duty as a slop bowl. Whether this service can be pressed into action now will be up to its new owner but even if not it is an elegant example of more contemporary Japanese design and a display item in its own right.Size: | Cups 4.7cm x 4.7cm Ht 4cm Width (max) 7.5cm; Large bowl Diam 15cm (max) Ht 8cm Base 7.8cm; Sugar Basin Diam (max) 7.5cm Ht (max)15cmase 4.5cm; Milk Jug Ht (max) 7.5cm Width (max) 7.5cm Base 3.8cm; Teapot 9.3cm x 2 Width (max) 13cm Ht (max) 15cm |
