LOT NUMBER 4
Gilt Metal Mounted Japanese Imari Box and Cover, late C19th
A circular box and cover comprising two shallow matching hemispheres, the lid with a modelled fruit finial and the underneath with traces of kiln grit, decorated in the Imari palette of underglaze blue, iron red and gold with the addition of green enamel, the base with three floral panels between circular stylised floral roundels below roundels with symbols, the lid similarly decorated, fitted in Europe with gilt metal mounts forming three feet and hinged mounting to the lid and base.Considerable care was taken to adapt this quite modest piece of Japanese export ware to what was presumably an addition to a boudoir dressing table. Evidently the original was felt by its owner to be a bit too plain and some enhancement was requested. The metal work is probably continental, perhaps French, and the hybrid result retains nevertheless a degree of provincial charm.
