Japanese Chenghua style Blue and White Bowl decorated boys, signed, mid C20th
A Japanese blue and white bowl of inverted conical form with a pronounced slightly flaring foot, decorated with a continuous scene of boys playing in a stylised garden scene with pine, peony and butterflies, a solid blue band to the foot and repeating ‘ju’i’ lappets below the top rim, the base with a two character script mark. Conical form bowls were made by both Chinese and Japanese potters but the style of decoration, paste of the foot and the script mark indicate the latter here rather than the former. But the Japanese potter is thinking of his counterpart’s productions since the design here recalls pieces from the Chinese Chenghua era (1465-1487) where the theme of boys at play (an auspicious symbol of family prosperity) was commonly employed. Period pieces in this design are aggressively sought after with a price to match but our bowl would allow a contemporary collector to enjoy the style for a rather more modest outlay!Size: | Diam 12cm Ht 5cm Base 4.5cm |
