Japanese Imari Charger of Kiku form, late C19th
An Imari decorated charger of circular of lobed edge circular form representing the ‘Kiku’ (Japanese for Chrysanthemum) flower, boldly decorated in the traditional colours of underglaze blue, iron red and gold with the addition of pink and green enamels, the central roundel with a basket of chrysanthemum flowers, surrounded by eight triangular shape panels arranged in pairs, two larger ones with the ‘ho ho’ bird and two fan shape with tree branches and a stylised garden scene, the reverse decorated with three pairs of scrolls bound with tassels. All the typical features of the ‘Imari’ wares (the name is taken from the port of export; the pieces were made at Arita in the Hizen province) exported in such large quantities by Japan in the late nineteenth century are to be found here. A bold design is combined with a riot of colour, not subtle, perhaps, but highly decorative and an excellent example of the genre.
