Pair of Japanese Imari Tokuri, signed, mid C20th
This is a fine quality pair of flasks of upright square form with a gentle sloping shoulder rising to a narrow cylindrical neck, the glazed foot with a two character script mark in underglaze blue. The decoration is in the Imari palette of underglaze blue, iron red and gold with the addition of green and grisaille colourings. Two of the sides have diamond shape stylised floral panels on a blue ground with cell work and diaper pattern and two a simple composition of a bird sitting on branching lotus, the shoulder with ‘ju’i’ form lappets to the corners and the neck with overlapping plantain leaves, the top rim dressed in brown glaze.Square shape slender flasks were produced by the Japanese from the late seventeenth century onwards, the form soon being copied and adapted by the Chinese. Decorative in themselves, these vessels were originally intended to hold gin. Later, smaller versions were produced and became known as ‘Tokuri’ (sometimes spelt ‘Tokkuri’) with the function now to act as dispensers for sake. This pair of flasks follow, then, a long tradition. Paste of the foot and the style of decoration suggests a C20th dating, perhaps to the 1950s/1960s but the quality of the work is obvious and they make a striking and unusual decorative ensemble.
