Unusual Japanese Kutani Vase with Pink ground, late C19th
The paste of the foot and the iron red and gold border decoration at the base indicate that this vase is the work of the Kutani kilns (Kaga province, Japan) much better known for their late ninetenth century export wares predominantly decorated in iron red and gold (compare Lot XX in this sale). Sometimes, even with these pieces, additional enamel colours were used but here the polychrome palette has taken over completely. A similar form is found in other Kutani pieces. The cylindrical body flares out towards the top with a slight curve to the profile and the neck is concave with a flaring top rim. But here the main body is decorated with a bird standing on a branch of flowering peony which continues to the reverse where there is a companion bird at flight. The neck has a pink ground with scattered gilt stylised floral sprigs on which are represented flying cranes, symbols of longevity. Doubtless one of an original pair, this vase is very much a reflection of the craze for things ‘Japanese’ which was so fashionable in Europe during the nineteenth century.| Size: | Ht 25cm Width (max) 13cm Base 7.5cm |
