LOT NUMBER 18
Edwardian silver Cheroot Case, Albert Jackson, Hallmarks for Birmingham 1904
A fine quality cheroot or cigarette case, the body modelled as six rounded tubes, four with engraved stylised floral decoration and two plain, the front with a central shield shape cartouche with the monogram initials [?] ‘MDSC’, the interior gilt with two original retaining ribbons and hallmarks, one four character (i) ’A’ ‘J’ for Albert Jackson (ii) anchor for the Birmingham Assay Office (iii) lion passant (iv) ‘e’ date letter for 1904 and the other two character (i) lion passant (ii) ‘e’.Albert Jackson was a firm of silversmiths based in Birmingham. Originally a partnership between two brothers, Albert and William, and based in Albion Street, the business became Albert’s own after 1899 when William left the firm and the partnership was dissolved. Records show the name as continuing in its original location until the mid 1970s. Smokers’ accessories seem to have been a speciality in the early years and this case, which remains in fine condition, is an excellent example of the firm’s work.
