LOT NUMBER 6
Chinese Blue and White Vase and Cover in the form of a Pagoda, end C20th or later
A blue and white vase and cover of square form in the form of a pagoda, the central section with a canopy above and a flaring base below, a squared conical cover forming the lid, decorated overall in underglaze blue with panels of figures and geometric and stylised floral designs, the lid and top with highlighting in red, the base with a sketchily drawn four character mark in underglaze blue which reads ‘Qianlong Nian Zhi’ (Made in the Qianlong period). The date mark here for Qianlong (1736-1795) is exaggeratedly optimistic since this box dates to the late C20th or even the early C21st. While considerable trouble has been taken with the form which required the joining of various flat shaped clay slabs, the decoration seems to rely on stencilling techniques as is particularly noticeable in the depiction of the figures. But the colours are bright and the shape amusing, all contributing to a modest table ornament of some attractionSize: | Ht 20cm (overall), Width (max) 8cm, Base 7.5cm square |
