Chinese Famille Rose Vase decorated Peacock and Flowers, Jingdezhen mark, late C20th
A baluster form vase with a concave neck, richly decorated in ‘Famille Rose’ enamels, the main body with a peacock amidst rocks, peony and lotus, a signed inscription or poem to the reverse no doubt describing the painted scene, the base with a ‘false gadroon’ or stylised lotus panel border above a small band of pink wave form design, the neck with two bands of ‘ju’i’ form lappet borders and two bands of stylised floral designs, peony and lotus on a pink ground and scrolling lotus on a yellow one, the base with a stamped six character mark in iron red which reads 'Zhong Guo Jing De Zhen Zhi' (Made at Jingdezhen, China – Zhonguo being the traditional name for China and used by the Chinese themselves). This is a fairly recent example of the richly decorated Famille Rose wares produced by the Chinese potters since the discovery of the ‘rose’ enamel colour in the early C18th. But there is still detail and quality to the painting (see image 5) and the overall effect is extremely pleasing. The mark used was applied to various pieces produced at Jingdezhen in the late C20th : ‘Republican’ in style but rather later, probably dating to the 1970s, although still highly collectible.| Size: | Ht 20c.5cm, Width (max) 9cm, Base 6.5cm |
