Famille Rose Brush Pot (bitong) decorated Phoenix, late C19th
A brush pot of typical slender cylindrical form, here slightly tapering inwards to the top, decorated in Famille Rose enamels with a pair of phoenix amidst rocks and flowering peony. The cylindical brush pot, sometimes of broad proportions and sometimes more slender, as here, was one of the regularly produced forms created by Chinese potters from the late C17th onwards. Found also in a wide variety of other media including jade and ivory, the brush pot, or bitong, was one of the standard ornaments of the scholar’s desk. This example dates to the end of the C19th as indicated by both the style of painting and the paste of the foot, but while the decoration is a bit sketchy it has a naif appeal of its own and is an attractive example of the later porcelains produced at Jingdezhen.| Size: | Ht 13cm, Base diam 8cm, Top diam 7.5cm |
