Majolica Style Brush Holder modelled as a Crane, mid C20th
While seemingly of European manufacture, this brightly coloured figure of a crane standing on a rock with sea shells and a vase like container to the reverse, doubtless intended to contain brushes, was, in fact, made in China. Some near identical examples exist which are stamped ‘CHINA’ and at least one has a paper label reading ‘Product of the People’s Republic of China’ (1912-1949). Examined closely, the paste of the foot is, in fact, a Chinese clay (see image 6) but there is little else to suggest an Oriental origin. The glazes are brightly coloured in the style of European nineteenth century ‘Majolica’ pieces, particularly some of the examples made in France, and the modelling has nothing Chinese about it at all. There is an impressed number at the base (‘74’) and an impressed mark which seems to depict some form of marine creature but cannot be identified. A puzzle piece, then, but highly attractive in its own right and an elegant decorative object.| Size: | Ht 25cm, Width (max) 14cm, Depth (max) 10cm |
