A Chinese Carved Wood Figure of Budai, signed, C 19th
A Chinese carved wood figure of Budai shown lying on a lotus leaf. He is depicted in a typically corpulent pose as a stout, smiling man in robes with a largely bare belly, which represents happiness, good luck, and plenty. In his left hand he holds a stylised object which is probably intended to represent the 'sack of plenty' which he is seen with so often and in his right hand is a round ball either representing a pearl (symbolising health and beauty) or a gold nugget (symbolising financial happiness). There is detailed carving to his robes and the lotus leaf is lightly incised with foliage underneath. In addition there is a small signature plaque with indistinct characters. The size and form suggests that this is a 'handling' figure intended for devotional purposes and the style of decoration indicates a circa date in the late nineteenth century.| Size: | 20 cm x 10 cm x 8 cm |
