LOT NUMBER 1
Chinese Ginger Jar Clobbered Decoration circa 1800
A Chinese Ginger Jar of typical form with a broad ovoid body and a short upright neck, the neck and shoulder top unglazed, decorated in underglaze blue with a traditional landscape scene overpainted in coloured enamels, predominantly yellow and orange, with flowers and highlight details, the base glazed. The jar itself is one of many produced in China in the early nineteenth century, more coarsely potted and decorated than the pieces specifically made for export and probably destined mainly for the local market. Notwithstanding, some of these found their way to the West where they were overdecorated in coloured enamels to satisfy the demand for polychrome wares. The additional enamel decoration would fire at a much lower temperature than the original blue and white so the process was quite safe. The main exponents of the technique were based in Holland and England, often operating as quite small concerns, and there is considerable variation in the quality and style of the decoration they applied. At its best, as here, it can have a naif charm of its own. From the middle of the nineteenth century in England such pieces began to be referred to as ‘clobbered’, a word derived from ‘clobber’ which originally referred to shoe and then clothing repair work. This jar, doubtless one of an original pair and lacking a cover, is a fine example of the more ‘provincial’ clobbered wares found today with an exceptionally lively and bright palette of colours.Size: | Ht 16cm, Width (top rim) 7.5cm, Width (max) 16.5cm, Base 14cm |
