LOT NUMBER 3
Japanese Celadon Ground Tazza with Chinese Nanking decoration, late C19th
This is an unusual and hybrid piece combining elements of both Japanese and Chinese decoration. The stoutly potted footed bowl, or tazza, is Japanese porcelain employing a fine quality stone like clay, visible on the underneath of the three feet, often found in these celadon glazed pieces made for export towards the end of the nineteenth century. The pedestal feet support a stubby bulbous column which in turn supports the circular serving dish on top. The underside of the dish has moulded decoration and its edge is slightly shaped. The celadon glaze is enhanced with blue and white decoration and the dish itself is wholly decorated in blue and white with a landscape scene closely resembling the designs on Chinese export wares of the late eighteenth century (see the previous lot in this sale for a typical example) and often known as ‘Nanking’ ware in Europe, Nanking being the Chinese port from which it was shipped to the West. The elaborate border with cell and diaper work and stylised flowers also copies the Chinese exemplar. The shape is a Japanese interpretation of a European form and was clearly intended as a serving dish, perhaps for a small desert service of pieces in a similar pattern, but it can stand on its own today as a piece both decorative and practical.Size: | Diam 20cm, Ht 10cm, Base 11cm |
