Two Chinese folding Fan Leaves with landscape scenes, now mounted, C20th

As quite often, these two paintings were created for use as folding fans but then mounted on board for display. Each has a landscape scene in tones of grey and blue inks painted on mustard coloured fabric. The designs include the typical elements of Chinese landscape painting : rocky outcrops with trees and lakeside scenes. In one can be seen a seated figure, in the other a man in a boat. Both have a calligraphy inscription and a red artist’s seal. The fairly sketchy brushwork suggests a mid C20th dating for which there are many parallels. Both are mounted on paper with an identical pattern of diaper work and roundels with phoenix and dragons implying that this was done at the same time. While the mounts are foxed, the paintings remain clear and if reframed would provide attractive examples of the genre.
