Chinese Calligraphy Scroll, Qing Dynasty (1636-1912)
This is a short scroll painting entirely composed of calligraphy. Nine lines of vertical text in flowing black ink script are flanked by two red seal marks and a black ink signature to the left and an iron red seal mark to the top right. The text is written on very thin mustard coloured silk (the colour may have darkened with time) which is mounted on a silk fabric ground with a brocade design. Below is mounted a similarly sized light aubergine panel, plain. The silk is backed by very thin light brown paper and fitted to a black lacquered wood scroll handle. From appearance this scroll, which is in rather poor condition, seems to date from at least the end of the nineteenth century but is perhaps earlier. It requires the assistance of an expert in Chinese calligraphy for further identification but may possibly reveal some hidden secrets of some interest.Size: | Width (scroll) 61.5cm (scroll handle) 67.5cm, Length (overall) 65cm |
