LOT NUMBER 28
Art Deco Crystal Glass Perfume Bottle with relief Stopper, Czech 1930s
This is an exceptional perfume bottle from the 1930s created in one of the glass studios in Czechoslovakia. During that period a number of grand and large scale pieces were produced there, perhaps taking their inspiration from the designs of Rene Lalique in France but quite individual in style with an accent on sculptural form. The ‘bottle’ here, more accurately a base, is of a pedestal form, a shallow angular pyramid with six roundels and a flaring scalloped neck, the crystal glass precisely cut with sharp detail to the ledges and edges. The stopper is in black glass, flat backed with a shallow relief depiction of a crouching naked lady within a floral border based on the famous sculpture ‘the little mermaid of Copenhagen’ created by Edvard Eriksen in 1913. The stopper is complete with its original clear glass wand which is highly unusual since most are broken off. The base has an etched mark ‘CZECHO’ ‘MADE IN’ ‘SLOVAKIA’ as is often found on pieces of this type although the format here is uncommon. Indeed, the piece itself is extremely unusual and there seem to be few direct parallels for either the bottle or the stopper. Clearly a luxury boudoir accessory at the time, it has survived in remarkable condition to enhance perhaps a contemporary dressing table. In recent years a number of the pre war Czech stopper designs have been copied and great care needs to be taken to avoid them. There is an excellent reference article at realrepro.com titled “Czech perfumes copied” by Madeleine France & Donna Sims which shows the reproductions alongside the originals. One determining feature is the ground base of the stopper above the wand. This should show horizontal grinding marks and have a bevel edge at the foot. The stopper here has both (see image 10) but this is only one of many features present which indicate that we have here a true original to be enjoyed as a prime example of Czech glass craftsmanship.
