LOT NUMBER 9
Italian square Perfume Bottle with sommerso and confetti designs, second half C20th
An unusual perfume bottle and stopper, the body of square form with cut corners and edges, the stopper rectangular with similar edges and both with metal screw thread fittings for attachment. The decoration combines layers of clear and blue glass in the ‘sommerso’ technique enclosing panels of multi coloured glass in a confetti like pattern, while the stopper alternates blue faces with blue combined with clear glass, again in a ‘sommerso’ like technique. The practice of layering different colours of glass was very much a hallmark of the Murano glass studios and there are similarly shaped examples, albeit with different decoration, which appear to originate from them, so this might also be the case here. Almost certainly the work is Italian and, whoever the maker, there is certainly skill in the execution here and this attractive design is not commonly found. General style suggests a dating to the 1970s or 1980s.Size: | Ht 10.2cm (overall), 7cm (bottle), Width 4.9cm square, Stopper 9cm |
