Etching of Pin Mill, Suffolk, C19th
The scene presented here is that of Pin Mill, a small village on the south bank of the River Orwell in southern Suffolk, England. The origin of the name is uncertain, since pin manufacturing is never known to have taken place there, but the location was regularly used as a landing point for ship-borne cargo, a centre for the repair of Thames sailing barges and the home to many small industries such as sail making. It is also held to have played a role in the smuggling activities which used to take place off the east Suffolk coast. Its picturesque views have often been the subject of artists and clearly caught the intention of the print maker here, whose initials ‘AxA’ can be seen at the bottom left corner but cannot, unfortunately, be identified. The view chosen looks over the estuary and the prominent building to the left is the ‘Butt and Oyster’ pub dating back to the seventeenth century and still in business today. The relatively uncluttered shore line suggests a nineteenth century dating if, as is reasonable to assume, it was a contemporary view which the artist tried to capture. The soft lines of the composition suggests the technique of etching rather than engraving where acid is used to create the image on the plate producing detailed and shallow designs and the unknown creator of this piece has produced an attractive image which fully exploits the potential of the technique.| Size: | Mount 23.3cm x 15cm, Etching 16cm x 7.5cm |
