An attractive needlework picture of a thatched country cottage set in a garden scene with a tree, shrubs and flowers. This colourful composition employs raised stitching effects to give something of a 3-dimensional effect known as the stumpwork technique. Its popularity began in England in the mid seventeenth century but has been continued by embroiderers until modern times. This is doubtless the work of an accomplished amateur and the backing of the frame suggests a mid twentieth century dating but its skill and charm speaks for itself.
