Lace picture of a lady, framed, C20th

An unusual lace picture depicting a lady wearing an elaborate robe about to receive a bird which flies towards her from the right and standing next to a slender flowering plant. While the skill of the maker is not in dispute both the country of origin and dating here are uncertain. There are resemblances to the work of the Austrian designer Dagobert Peche for the Wiener Werkstätte (see image 9), but his style was more angular and abstract while the flowing and elaborate robe recalls loosely the paintings of Gustav Klimt, for example the celebrated portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer (see image 10). So a continental origin is quite plausible, perhaps Brussels which was famous for lace work (see image 11), and the treatment of the figure with its elongated head and slightly abstract proportions does suggest the early twentieth century and the format of the frame, and indeed the label at the back where the piece is priced at seven guineas, do not conflict with this. But these uncertainties should not detract from a striking example of the lace maker’s craft.
