Pair of framed watercolours, Dartmoor scenes, signed S.Miller, early C20th
A pair of watercolours depicting two Dartmoor landscape scenes, each with heather bordered streams in the foreground and mist covered mountains in the background beneath cloudy skies, the sun rising in one, both signed to the bottom left ‘S.Miller’. While other signed works are known by this artist little or nothing else is known about his or her identity. Perhaps Cornwall was ‘home’ since all the other pictures found are of Dartmoor as well and are all painted in the same semi impressionistic style with colour tones emphasising browns and blues. The mood reflects the misty uncertainties of the world of Debussy’s ‘Pelleas et Melisande’ and an early twentieth century dating seems reasonable. Surviving as a well balanced pair in sympathetic frames which are doubtless later, these two scenes would be an elegant addition to a traditional interior, as well as of interest to a collector of twentieth century English watercolours.| Size: | Frame : 45cm x 32.2cm x1.5cm; Watercour : 24.5cm x 12.5cm |
