Six engravings of Pigs published by Rogerson and Tuxford, second half C19th

A set of six engravings of pigs, all by Edward Hacker (1812-1905) after various artists and issued by Rogerson and Tuxford from the 1860s to the 1870s. It was the custom of gentleman farmers to commission pictures of their ‘prize’ livestock which were then issued as prints, sometimes in agricultural magazines and sometimes as wall decoration for the farmhouse. Edward Hacker was a celebrated engraver who specialised in sporting and animal prints and Rogerson and Tuxford were well known for publishing animal prints. Doubtless many more examples were issued in addition to the six here, but they are typical of the output and the genre in general and are collected by enthusiasts today.

We see (1) ‘Dorset Infants’ (1877) after Edward Corbet (1823-1899) a British artist who specialised in sporting scenes and portraits of animals (2) ‘The Cup Pen of Pigs’ (1874) artist anonymous (3) ‘A Prize Boar’ (1860) after William Henry Davis, a British artist many of whose works were commissioned horse and livestock portraits (4) ‘Prize Pigs’ (1868) after Edward Corbet (5) ‘Prize Pigs’ (1861) after John Vine (1808-1867) a watercolourist whose work included animal studies (6) ‘Improved Dorset Pigs’ (1866) after Edward Corbet.
