LOT NUMBER 10
Caithness Glass figure of a Dancer designed by Sarah Peterson, early 21st Century
An art glass figure in the form of a dancer with one raised and one outstretched arm and a small stylised head, the body with small swirling bubbles surrounding an irregular shaped column with minute bubbles, the base with a smooth matt foot. Caithness Glass is a Scottish manufacturer of art glass in a wide variety of forms and was established in Wick, Caithness, Scotland in 1961 by Robin Sinclair, the second 2nd Viscount Thurso. Its fortunes have been mixed and there were then to be various rescue attempts and relaunches, the last in 2006 when it was bought by Dartington Crystal. Sarah Peterson joined the firm aged 15 as an assistant in the Perth factory shop and rejoined in 2000 as Design Developer and then Lead Designer in 2008. Accordingly this piece, of which other examples are known, was made in the early 21st Century. The design is striking and is enhanced here by a separate illuminating base, sold with this piece, which can cause it to be displayed in a small range of complimentary colours. The base has two paper labels one of which reads 'Caithness Glass Unselected Made in Scotland' which indicates that this is a 'second', clearly rejected on the basis of the small manufacturing flaw described below.Size: | Ht 19.5cm (max) Width 15cm (max) |
