TEST ITEM - A European Boat Model of a Battil
A European Boat Model of a Battil
the wooden boat model with detailed features and material sails; aged patina
It appears that this model is a reproduction of an Omani Battil.
The Battil Was, untill the easrly years of this century, fairly common as a coastal trading vessel in Oman. In the Gulf, they had practically died out by the late 1930's when they were said to be only three still in use there. Sitting low on the water, thery had very slim lines and were noted for their speed, for which reason they were said to have been popular as fighting vessels. In the 19th century, it was often fitted with guns.
The battil was perhaps the most remarkable looking of Omani (or indeed Arab) vessels, with its stem-piece carved like a rounded club or fiddle head, and its high end stern post presenting the profile of a simplified dog's head.
A Battil might be up to 200 tons and over 75 feet in length, the larger Battil had two or even three masts. They are no longer seen in Oman, and there is no evidence as to precisely when they became extinct in Omani waters.
