Ari Singh on Horseback, Mewar, India, c.1770,
gouache with beetlewing and gold on paper, the ruler depicted on a bay stallion with rich trappings, smoking a huqqa held by his attendant, surrounded by a red border inscribed in devanagariscript. Ari Singh, ruler of Udaipur from 1761-1773, was not very popular and had only a small number of courtiers. Nevertheless, his reign was artistically fruitful, producing fine paintings, typically hunting scenes, durbars and the royal stables of horses and elephants. see Andrew Topsfield, Court Painting at Udaipur, Zurich, 2001, p.201
