This scene is one of twelve published under the title Views of Calcutta. Mildred Archer writes of this scene (Early Views of India, London, 1980, no.4): "We are looking north along Clive Street, past the eastern wall of Old Fort William, in the left. On the right is the memorial to the tragedy of the Black Hole which had taken place inside the Fort in 1756... The memorial was erected by one of the survivors, John Zephaniah Holwell. In the centre background can be seen the Theatre built by public subscription in 1775. On the extreme right is part of Writers' Buildings."
