LOT NUMBER 16
Wood Portrait Head of a Goddess, Bali (signed), C20th
This is one of a group of similarly conceived portrait heads produced by the wood carvers of Bali, Indonesia and in this case marked with its place of manufacture. Dating is uncertain but probably to the late C20th. Carved from mahogany, the serene head of the lady is surmounted by an elaborate headdress richly carved with stylised floral designs and openwork leaves; below is a flaring support similarly decorated and perhaps intended as a handle so that the figure could be used in a ritual context. Some see the Hindu Goddess Parvati here and certainly the figure has more than a hint of the divine. It is a striking composition whatever its origins and would be an arresting accent piece for a contemporary interior.Size: | 39 x 18.5 cm |
