Assembled Tea Set in the Cut for Coffee Pattern, Taylor and Kent, late C20th
A part tea set comprising four coffee cups or cans of upright form, slightly fluted, with elaborate loop handles, the matching saucers and plates also slightly fluted, all decorated with a pattern of overlapping playing cards. Each piece is marked underneath to include the pattern name ‘Cut for Coffee’ but the cups and saucers are marked ‘Elizabethan’ ‘Staffordshire Fine Bone China’ ‘England’ and the plates ‘A Crownford Product’ above a crown, ‘Est 1875’ ‘Queen’s China Staffordshire’ ‘English Fine Bone China’.Both these marks are for the firm Taylor and Kent which was established in Longton, Stoke on Trent, in 1875. Bought eventually in 1947 by two brothers, Oswald and Derek Shufflebottom, it adopted the trade name 'Elizabethan China' in 1961 and became known as 'Elizabethan Fine Bone China Ltd' in 1982, merging with Rosina China Co. Ltd in 1987, also owned by the Shufflebottom brothers. In 1989 the merged companies became Crownford China Co. Ltd and were eventually bought by the Churchill group in 1994.
The cups and saucers are therefore slightly older than the plates which were bought as replacements or additions but the decoration is identical and the selection of pieces both useful and decorative. Perfect for bridge games or Alice in Wonderland themed tea parties!
