LOT NUMBER 21
Posy Vase with two Mice and a Cat, possibly German C20th
This is a highly entertaining small vase for the display of posy flowers, the oval lobed body, light grey glazed with highlighting in blue, with a straight neck with three openwork panels at the front matched by incised panels to the reverse, above four short tapering feet, the base glazed and with an indistinct incised mark. On the front can be seen two applied modelled mice to the left, their tails snaking underneath them and a modelled cat to the right with a similar tail; in between is a green glazed tassel. This unusual piece has no ready parallels and its provenance and age are mainly guesswork. The paste of the foot suggests one of the German potteries and the design has an Art Deco feel which may suggest a dating to that time. But the uncertainty here does not diminish the novelty of this vase which can simply be enjoyed on its own merits.Size: | 9 cm high, 15 cm wide |
