LOT NUMBER 7
Chinese blue and white Pilgrim or Moon Vase decorated with dragons and flowers, C19th
A Chinese pilgrim or moon form vase, the flattened cylindrical body with a short foot below and a tubular, very slightly flaring, neck above, the shoulder with applied modelled lizards and the base inset, decorated all over in bright underglaze blue with a central panel of dragons and flowers on a ground of stylised scrolling lotus, the foot and the neck with a band of repeating stylised plantain leaves and the top rim with a border of repeating fleur de lis and dot designs. The pilgrim or moon vase form, supposedly taking its name from the shape of the water bottles carried by pilgrims or the moon itself, is one of the classic Chinese forms and was made with many variations from the Ming period onwards. This vase is an excellent example of the nineteenth century version, probably dating to the 1860s, and is well potted with carefully rendered applied decoration.
