Empire style hairbrush with malachite glass, Hoffman-Schlevogt, Czechoslovakia, 1930s

An Art Deco period hairbrush with elaborate and ornate gilt metal mounts in the Empire style, the back set with a green malachite glass panel depicting cherubs and flowers. This hairbrush originally formed part of a set, all the pieces with similar decoration, which would have also included a hand mirror, brush, trinket box, soap dish and perfume bottles. It was made by the Czech firm Hoffman-Schlevogt, a partnership between Heinrich Hoffman and Henry Schlevogt, who married Hoffman’s daughter. Schlevogt developed a series of moulds which allowed the production of high quality glass wares in blue and malachite green with detailed decoration. A malachite glass box and cover of this type can be seen elsewhere on Intercollector. One of the firm’s particularly popular models were dressing table sets with implements set with malachite glass plaques and malachite glass objects. These were marketed under the brand name ‘Ingrid’, after Schlevogt’s daughter, and some pieces carry a label with the name. The ‘Ingrid’ range was presented at the Spring Trade Fair in Leipzig in 1934 and the Chicago World’s Fair in the same year, meeting immediate success. Production continued until the Nazi invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1938 which caused interruption. Many years later, the moulds were rediscovered and used to make modern reproductions in the 1970s, but the format of this piece indicates that it is indeed an original from the 1930s, surviving in excellent condition.
