Otter glass paperweight, Mats Jonasson, Maleras Glasbruk, Sweden, late C20th

A lead crystal glass paperweight in the form of a boulder with an etched portrait of an otter, sometimes called ‘curious otter’ signed at the base by the artist, Mats Jonasson, with the pattern number ‘3289’. Maleras Glasbruk, or simply Maleras, is a Swedish glassworks which has produced high quality pieces since its foundation in 1890, taking its name from the town in which it is situated. Mats Jonasson joined the firm as an apprentice engraver in 1959 and went on to produce distinctively individual pieces which he still creates today. Many take their inspiration from nature and on the firm’s website Jonasson is quoted as saying ‘Our forests have captured the hearts and minds of people since time immemorial’. This Otter sculpture is a fine example of his work and seems now not to be in production so most likely dates to the final years of the twentieth century. All the examples of it are signed, rather indistinctively, with his name and ‘Sweden’ (as here) and some have a paper label with his name and the wording ‘Signature Collection’ (missing here). This is a classic piece of ‘ice glass’ sculpture and would be a striking decorative accessory.
