Poppy pattern Jug, Janice Tchalenko for Dartington Pottery, 1980s
A small jug, the body comprising two broad cones, one inverted, with a triangular form spout and a simple loop handle opposite, the unglazed base with a comb pattern and a small impressed mark reading ‘DP’, the white glaze with a semi abstract design of poppies in coloured enamels.The mark is for Dartington Pottery which was founded before the war by Bernard Leach in the grounds of Dartington Hall, Devon, and was then taken over by Sam Haile and Marianne de Trey in the 1940s who ran a successful business there, being joined by Janice Tchalenko in 1984 whose bright and colourful designs enjoyed great popularity. The pottery, though, closed in 2005 and was then taken over by Grayshott Pottery, based in Surrey, who still produce a limited range of pieces under the Dartington name. The ‘poppy pattern’ is a typical Tchalenko design and an example of a near identical jug is included in the Victoria and Albert Museum collection and referred to in British Studio Pottery : the Victoria and Albert Museum Collection by Oliver Watson.
