Pressed green glass Commemoration Plate, coronation of Edward VIII on 12th May 1937
A commemorative ware green pressed glass dish with a ruffle edge, the centre with a medallion portrait of the prospective King Edward VIII surrounded by lettering naming him and his proposed coronation day, 12th May 1937. After the death of George VI in January 1936, many manufacturers began making commemorative wares in anticipation of the coronation of his eldest son, David, in May the following year. They were then famously wrong footed by the new (uncrowned) King’s abdication in December 1936 and left with merchandise which was no longer relevant or appropriate. Some of these pieces still survive, but this glass dish is one of the much less common ones. A desirable item, then, for collectors of commemorative memorabilia and a memento of a troubled time in the history of the British monarchy.As he did in so many other respects, Edward VIII broke with tradition and demanded that his face look in the same direction as his Father’s, in order to show his hair parting. The custom was for the direction of the head to alternate. His brother George VI, though, chose the same orientation on the grounds that he ought to have been following a predecessor facing the other way!
