Silver Cuff bracelet by Stavre Gregor Panis with maritime motifs, signed, American c1940
This is a beautiful cuff bracelet by the American silversmith Stavre Gregor Panis. It has typical maritime motifs that have been incised into the silver. We see a bird, a sea shell, a starfish, a seahorse and a fish on a stylised seaweed ground with a rope twist border. It is clearly marked with his initials 'SGP' in a triangle and 'STERLING'.Stavre Gregor Panis (1889–1974) was a prominent Albanian-born American silversmith, jeweller, and enameller celebrated for his handwrought Arts & Crafts style metalwork. Based primarily in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, Panis is highly regarded by collectors for his intricately pierced and chased sterling silver jewellery inspired by nature and nautical themes. Pieces crafted by Panis are typically stamped with his signature hallmark: the initials SGP (often enclosed within a triangle or cartouche) alongside the word STERLING, as here. Because of his legacy, his items are regularly featured in specialty collections, such as The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
