Newlyn School brass Chamber Candlestick decorated fish, early C20th
A brass chamber candlestick the tray of shallow leaf form with short lobed upright sides and with a central candle holder and a loop handle at the end, the hammered decoration with two fish, sometimes referred to as ‘smiling fish’, on a punched ground, the loop handle with embossed small circular beads and prominent rivet fixings. These pieces are thought to have been made at Newlyn, Cornwall, a small town very close to Penzance which was the home of an artists’ colony from the 1880s to the early twentieth century. Principally known for its painters, Newlyn also had a studio of metal workers whose pieces reflected both the contemporary Arts and Crafts style and the marine surroundings of the location. Both these can be seen here with the design of fish and the ‘rustic’ handle with its prominent rivet fixings which were very much a feature of the metalwork the artists there produced. Dating is to the early twentieth century and the candlestick is a quaint example of the ‘Newlyn’ style.
