Silver spoon with cherub head terminal, A. Halberstadt, Copenhagen, Denmark, marked, 1893-1895
A silver spoon the ovoid bowl with a rope twist handle ending in an ovoid terminal with a cherub’s head, seen on both sides, the underneath with three marks : a device with three towers for Copenhagen guaranteeing the purity of the piece, ‘A.H’ for the silversmith A. Halberstadt, a device which is hard to decipher but is most likely for assay mark for the assay master Simon Groth. The markings essentially explain the history of this Danish spoon. A. Halberstadt was a well known Danish jewellery and silversmith firm founded in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1846 by Amsel Moses Halberstadt (1846–1901) which specialised in high quality silverware and especially flatware. The business still exists today with a boutique in the famous Strøget pedestrian street but focuses on gold and diamond jewellery and objects rather than the silverware traditionally associated with it. This particular format of the maker’s mark was only used between 1893 and 1895 allowing extremely precise dating. The identity of the assay master has though to be inferred. Simon Groth served as the Copenhagen Silver Assay Master from 1863 to 1904 and his usual mark is an intertwined ‘SG’ which cannot easily be seen in the assay mark here but the testing must have been carried out under his direction. This is then a ‘classic’ piece of nineteenth century Danish silver work with an unusually precise attribution, surviving in excellent condition.
