Art Deco Bakelite Cicada Brooch, British 1930s

This is an unusual brooch from the Art Deco period made from amber coloured bakelite and in the form of a cicada. Cicadas have been featured in literature and art from early times in both Greece and China. They were also a subject for the carvers of Japanese netsuke. In myth and folklore they are symbols of carefree living and immortality which might be seen as a hidden message from the wearer!
