LOT NUMBER 5
Pair of Vintage Japanese Kokeshi Dolls, signed, late C20th
Two complementary wood dolls of ladies carved and painted in a semi abstract form and signed at the base. Kokeshi are simple wooden Japanese dolls that have been made in Japan for more than 150 years as children's toys. Originally from the Tohoku region in northern Honshu, kokeshi are handmade from wood, having a simple torso and head with a few thin, painted lines to define the face. One characteristic of kokeshi dolls is their lack of arms or legs. Production continues to this day and the dolls are regarded as highly collectible. This pair of figures are typical of the genre and both signed by the same artist. They have an appeal of their own or might form part of a larger collection.Size: | 12.5 x 5 cm |
